In January 2026, Luxembourg launched a pilot phase for the Physical Activity Prescription scheme. Developed by the Ministry of Health and Social Security in partnership with the Ministry of Sports, national sports and medical associations, and general practitioners, the initiative allows specially trained physicians to prescribe tailored exercise programmes to adult patients with cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes or cancer who are physically inactive or insufficiently active. They can receive a six-month prescription to supervised physical activity through accredited associations, with qualified professionals tailoring programmes to individual health needs.
The scheme is integrated into the eSanté digital portal, streamlining referrals and patient follow-up. Costs are covered by the Ministry of Health through a specific convention with the National Health Fund, CNS. The pilot runs through 2026 and is supported by continuous evaluation, capturing experiences from clinicians, patients and partner organisations. It is envisaged as a scalable public health measure to reduce symptoms, improve disease outcomes and reinforce prevention.
